Text Box: November can be cold but it normally starts warm and ends up having some days in the 50’s and night just above freezing. If you have a big collection you want it to get cold early and stay cool until at least mid March. The danger with November is it will get cold, leaves will drop, you prune, repot and it gets hot and you have Spring about 3 months early with the coldest days ahead. If you have a large collection and must start work the only option is to do a lot of dancing with your bonsai. You work on the Elms, Tridents and any other species that always starts new growth in February. Text Box: Once the leaves drop you do your work ,place the bonsai in deep shade, out of the wind, keep them moist, bring them in if it freezes but don’t let them heat up. Lots of trouble, you bet but that bonsai. I think the semi-tropicals, Pines, Hornbeams should be potted closer to March and the last days of our winter. Too many individual species to list them all here but if you have questions give me a call or ask me at a meeting. Juniper are tuff so working on them can start as soon as the nights get into the 50’s and we loose the day time highs 80 or above. You will need to give them sunlight Text Box: not shade, morning sun is best and no freezing. Our bonsai grow roots all winter. Not a problem with most but when you repot you give the tree lots of room to grow soft roots. Roots that can be killed by severe cold.
Survey your collection. See what need repotting. Set up a shady place that is close to winter protection. Start working on trees that are very tolerate to any work. Watch them carefully and proceed to trees that are less tolerant to work . Work on those closer to the end of winter. Always protect from drying wind and freezing temps. It’s a winter long dance. Joe.
Text Box: the years I’ve looked at many collections and watched my own. What I noticed was, collections that received nearly full sun all day and were well potted and watered did wonderful. Even Azalea and other “they like shade” bonsai look much healthier. With chain saw and pole saw in hand over the past 5 years I gave my bonsai more and more sunlight. It has make me repot more often and be Text Box: When I started creating bonsai trees about 25 years ago local information didn’t exist. The information for growing bonsai in books and magazines had information but it was all for growing in northern climates. Almost everywhere it said keep your trees the shade because they were small pots. Probably good advice at the time when you didn’t know much about soil , potting or anything. Over Text Box: much more careful about watering but the results have been impressive. I have a routine now that works for me. Trees that I am developing stay in oversize containers. No large containers but the next size up from the final container. Trees that are in show containers are moved as the summer heat starts to stress them to a more shaded area. I water often as I can the trees that need the water. Joe.
