Text Box: Southern Bonsaist
Text Box: I can almost hear most ACBS members saying “ when it cools off in September I’m going to go out every afternoon and get lots of bonsai work done”. Our temps will cool down to normal highs of upper 80’s but the days will become shorter quicker. The sun will set at 7:15 the first day of September -setting at 6:40 by the end of September. If you get home from work by 6 P.M. Take time to eat before you go out it will almost be dark. The sun will set at 5:10 P.M. by the end of October.
Sad but true. When the weather is at it’s best the days are the shortest.
Text Box: To get a lot of bonsai work done during those short, cooler days you have to get a lot of bonsai items ready and waiting on you to need them. September is a great “list making-go shopping” month.
The first list should be”
Everything I need to do to each tree in my collection.
The second list should be
Everything I need to buy for my bonsai work.
You can find lots of bargains as the stores mark down their gardening stock of fertilizers, chemicals and some plants as winter comes on.

Text Box: If you are going to make progress with your bonsai collection during the fall and winter you have to know what needs to be done, the best time of the year to do it and what you will need for the project. Go out to your bonsai area with a mission in mind not to find a mission and waste time.
Now is the time to ask yourself if your bonsai area needs improvement. What improvements would make it healthier for the bonsai and easier for you to take care of your collection? Have the improvements finished before spring. Spring is the time to spend improving your bonsai not your bonsai area. Joe Day
Text Box: shows at this location drew large and constant attention. Many people ask if we were selling bonsai and supplies. We hope adding a vendor to the show will give viewers a chance to step into the world of owning and caring for a bonsai. The inside room will be a very nice location to show bonsai. This library is large, new and very modern. They will provide advertisement on the library web site, newsletter and signs. This will be the only ACBS Spring show of bonsai. We will Text Box: The West Regional Library on Grelot Road will be the location of the 2007 Regional Show. April 28th will be the date. This location has proven during the last two years to have a constant flow of people who are interested in the art of bonsai. We will set up both inside in the large meeting room and outside under the deep overhang. We will also have a lecture room available to use for morning and afternoon lectures. The ok has been give to allow us to have a vendor section. Our past two Text Box: certainly have our Day of Bonsai event and possibly a limited show of bonsai at the Festival of Flowers. Text Box: Move them to a place on the bench where they will get the cooler morning sun. Spray with a fungicide. Remove any and all weeds from the container. Keep them moist between rains.
If you have bonsai that you are developing by allowing the branches or apex to grow long and thicken, if you have to protect these from

Text Box: the winter cold, now is the time to cut them back and allow the back budding to happen. Those extra long branches or apex can and probably will get broken in winter storage. Best to cut now where it will enhance the design, not just broke off somewhere. Joe Day
Text Box: As the Fall growing season begins it gives everyone a chance to bring their bonsai into a healthy condition before our short winter and the demands of another growing season. Give your plants some organic fertilizer now. Replace any soil that has washed off the surface bringing the soil level to almost the top of the roots.
