Text Box: Falling trees fall where they want to fall so protecting for that event isn’t possible. Hurricane winds seldom get strong enough to hurt anything that is less than 3 feet off the ground. The rain beating the ground can toss up lots of grit and grime. It’s the period after the hurricane that kills bonsai. It’s the lack of watering if you are away.
If you have a place where you can put down some plastic sheet , with holes poked into it, then put about 6 inches to one foot of pine bark mulch on it you will have the start of a good hurricane area. The plastic will keep the dirt out of your pots.

Text Box: Placing your bonsai down into the Pine bark mulch covered to the trunk will keep them firmly on the ground. Wet the Pine back and you will have a place where your bonsai can stay wet with you away for up to 10 days more or less depending on the amount of sunlight that hits your area. The Pine back stays wet a long time but it will breath so the roots won’t get a case of root rot. With a bit of rain after the storm this set up could last for weeks. Your trees will need to be pulled out as soon as it’s possible and put back on benches. If you have the wind, sunlight, heat, and low humidity after the storm you can smooth down the pine back and put your bonsai on top of the

Text Box: Pine bark. A good spray of fungicide the first day they are out of the pile and every 7 to 10 days as long as they are on top of the Pine bark will prevent lots of problems. The humidity from the Pine bark will cool the air and keep the drying effect of the low humidity more in check. Run lots of fresh water through the pots every chance you get to flush out any salt spray ...then…. cross your fingers.
You can buy bulk pine bark small mulch at several local nurseries. The thick plastic clean up bags will hold 40 gallons until it’s needed. Joe
