Text Box: Text Box: Text Box: The first 60 Days
Text Box: It’s been called an explosion of growth and with some trees the new growth seems to explode out of the buds. It’s a busy time for any bonsai artist. You will get 90 percent of your growth the first 60 days after bud break. This does not apply to tropical bonsai. It’s a wonderful time to be out and among your bonsai. Much more so if you have been able to get your trees ready for this time of fast growth and you have time to do all the trimming, watering , spraying and fertilizing that needs to be done. This time used correctly can lead to great advances in development for any bonsai. Fast growth can lead to fast developing problems. Maples can grow out of shape in a few days. Both Elm and Trident Maple bonsai can push new growth at the apex quickly creating a thick out of shape apex in less than a week. Pine bonsai can create long candles almost overnight, actually a couple of days. If you need to pinch candles to retain shape you better be watching daily. You could call most fast growing bonsai “ Stand by me” trees. You almost need to stand by them as they grow to trim or pinch off the growth before it get too long or to hard.
To take advantage of this first 60 days you will need sharp tools. You will need good benches or pole stand to put you bonsai at a comfortable working level and at a comfortable working distance for you arm reach. You need water available in your bonsai area. You need to have any insect sprays where they can be mixed and used quickly. Tomorrow could be too late. If you can light up your bonsai area at night, you can come home late, do critical watering or trimming or spraying. When you are starting bonsai, water and light in your bonsai area is a nice feature. When you have good bonsai ...it’s a must. Joe Day
