Text Box: Southern Bonsaist
Text Box: The heat and lack of rain made me over pot some of my bonsai, put soil in the pots higher than normal and use a good organic fertilizer on all my bonsai. I still lost some of my developing stock that was weak from the effects of the extreme heat and low humidity from last fall but I have better than normal growth with other bonsai. My Japanese Maple have stayed in good health but growth has been slow. Zelkova have grown better than ever. My few Catlin elm have done very well. My Lantana potted with lots of fertilizer and lots of soil in the pot has grown the best ever.

Text Box: For reasons that I don’t fully understand the Azalea bonsai potted the same as every other year have grown better than they have in lots of years. They haven’t grown as much as previous good rain years but they have wonderful color and healthy leaves. I have not had any problems this year with leaf chewing insects. Without the tender new growth to chew on I guess they have found tasty leaves somewhere else. I have not had fungus problems or root problems. These are the positives. The negatives are the lack of growth. I could not take a chance on doing drastic

Text Box: work on some bonsai due to the severe weather conditions. All my cuttings I took in the Spring died. The Air layer work I wanted to do was put off for another year. My bonsai area has been set up with most of my bonsai under the trees or on pushed together on benches that get only half day sunlight. It helps the bonsai but it certainly makes my display area look more like a bonsai parking lot than a bonsai display area.
If the rains return or I can keep watering as needed this year might turn out to be a so-so year instead of a bad year for my bonsai.
